I had the pleasure of chatting with Sylvia from Bella Botanica at the first of our Vendor Spotlights.
Tell us about your business?
Bella Botanica is a Wedding & Event floral design business. We have a studio in Co. Meath close to the Dublin border but we travel nationwide.
What led you to Floral design?
To be honest I had never thought of it as a career as I was a Social care worker for 18 years in the disability sector. But I decided it was time for a career change and I had always loved florals and colour so I decided to give it a try to see if I was any good at it.
What keeps you passionate about weddings?
I love the connection I have with the couples and it really gives me great joy to then create beautiful designs on their day and for them to love it.
How long have you been in business?
Since February 2014
What should couples know before hiring a floral designer?
Couples should know that pricing can differ from one floral designer to the next, this is due to expertise levels, the client experience they offer, and the florals they use. The cheapest does not always mean the best so remember to choose a floral designer you can trust to do an amazing job.
What sets you apart in your field?
I always design without the use of single plastic floral foam, it has such a negative effect on our environment. Another thing that sets me apart from some other floral design studios, is that I get to know all of my couples personally which inspires me to create the most beautiful designs for them.
What common mistakes do you see couples making?
I see couples who are trying to work within a smaller floral budget, try put flowers everywhere in tiny amounts which in my opinion does not work. They are best to choose even one larger piece like a deconstructed arch for their ceremony or a hanging installation behind a head table that can really make an impact visually.
What’s your best advice for couples planning a wedding?
I would advise couples to choose their vendors they love and trust, then sit back and enjoy the lead up to their wedding. Let those vendors shoulder the responsibility for their part in your day
What’s your most memorable wedding?
I worked on a three-day Indian wedding with Waterlily Weddings which was memorable due to the beauty of it, the scale of work, and also the extra challenge of a storm that came in and we had to take everything out of the glass marquee after dinner!
Outside of floral design , tell us about yourself?
I am a fun-loving person, I don’t take myself too seriously. I love dancing, listening to music and podcasts. My husband, three children, and two dogs keep me on my toes when I am not designing. I love to be out in nature, whether it’s in a forest, by the sea, or in the mountains.
