I had the pleasure of chatting with Laura from Wild Feather Event Styling at our monthly Vendor Spotlights. I am a big fan of Boho weddings and keep admiring Laura’s work. I hope you enjoy reading …
Tell us about your business?
Wild Feather – Event Styling has become Ireland’s leading boho decor hire and stylist dedicated to all things Bohemian. It was first developed when myself and my hubby were planning our own wedding, and we noticed there were not enough alternative options for couples in Ireland. We wanted to simply have an outdoor wedding ceremony in a unique location, but we struggled to get a supplier that would set up our ceremony with seating for our guests, then take it away when the ceremony had finished, and we had left for our reception. It was a simple task really, but we could only find companies that offered full-day hire of chairs and pick up was the next day. We didn’t go ahead with that idea and found a venue location instead, but we still got our outdoor ceremony in the end. This was the start of Wild Feather Event Styling. We created Pop up ceremonies as an option for couples, giving them more freedom to have their ceremony where ever they like! All they need is themselves, their guests, and a celebrant. Perfect for an elopement, small weddings, and giving exclusive/ private venues a hassle-free solution to take care of a full ceremony set up.
What led you to Event styling?
I was always the party planner, the creative one to put the decor of a party together. So when I planned my own wedding and styling my reception up to 7 pm the day before the big day ( I know crazy but I loved every minute of it!), this gave me a newfound love. I was always creative and have a background in art and design, so it just came naturally to me. When I had my son, and we moved back from New Zealand, I wanted the right job that would give me enjoyment but also the right work and life balance I needed.
What keeps you passionate about weddings?
The couples! I love hearing their stories. Weddings are such a happy occasion in anyone’s lifetime. Having being married myself, there is no feeling like it, the emotions and happiness you feel on your wedding day, there is nothing like it. I’m lucky to be able to live in that moment of excitement with all my couples while planning their decor and be able to create that dream wedding they will remember for the rest of their lives. Of course, wedding styling to me is like an art, it allows you as the stylist to be creative and come up with ideas for our couples as well as designing new ones.
How long have you been in business?
Wild Feather event styling has been in the making for 2 years now, but we have been in business since March 2020. We have 15 years of experience in customer service as well as working with brides.
Where do you find inspiration?
International trends, a lot of my style comes from New Zealand and Australia. That more laid-back approach to wedding styling but also giving that creative edge to a wedding or event. Floral designers, wedding dress designers, all sectors of the wedding industry are hugely important in understanding a couple’s desired wedding that they may want.
What should couples know before hiring a stylist?
1)Don’t panic, you don’t need to know exactly what you would like. Wedding stylists can help you navigate to what you would like for your day.
2) Have an idea about the colours you would like to be incorporated into the whole event.
3) Create an ideas board on Pinterest and this will be your bible when talking to your stylist, as it is something you can relate back to when explaining your ideas.
4) Wedding stylists love to create and help when they can, so never be shy to ask the smallest or biggest questions.
What sets you apart in your field?
I suppose I’m the first in Ireland to really take on board the Bohemian style and all its decor to help create that look for a wedding or event. We are so far the only business in Ireland that you will be able to hire true authentic boho decor pieces such as peacock chairs, wicker lounge suites, macrame arches, etc.
What common mistakes do you see couples making?
I see couples who are trying to work within a smaller floral budget, try to put flowers everywhere in tiny amounts which in my opinion does not work. They are best to choose even one larger piece like a deconstructed arch for their ceremony or a hanging installation behind a head table that can really make an impact visually.
What’s your best advice for couples planning a wedding?
Worrying about what other people may want…my rule is it’s your wedding, your way. It is a day of celebrating you as a couple and your love story, bringing in all your elements into your day.
What’s your most memorable wedding?
It has to be so far our first wedding after Covid-19 first lockdown. It was a gorgeous intimate wedding held in Ashley park house hotel. You could really feel the love in the room, for the couple it was just magical.
Outside of floral design, tell us about yourself?
I’m a mum to a gorgeous 1-year-old son. Met my husband Shane in New Zealand. Lived there for almost 9 years before returning home. Love to travel, take a road trip on my downtime, secretly I would love to be able to have more dogs, especially the old and unwanted so that they can live out their golden years loved and cared for.
